Review of Adaptation. (2002) by Cory W — 24 Aug 2010
Spike Jonze. Charlie Kaufman. Nicolas Cage. Meryl Streep. Chris Cooper. Need I say more? "Adaptation" is like watching something being created right before your eyes. This is a miraculous film that breaks all the boundaries of modern-day story devices and adds in its own wonderfully zany taste of irony.
The film is actually true and fake at the same time. All of the people (excluding Donald) are actually real individuals. But they're not. Kaufman (the screenwriter, not the character) shines with the script.
The screenplay is fresh, original, and one of the most strange aspects, the center of the plot. The writer in the movie is actually writing the movie. It's trippy, but it works. The whole cast is on fire here, especially Cage, Streep, and Cooper (who rightfully won the Oscar).
I must say I'm not a fan of "Being John Malkovitch", but "Adaptation" is a Jonze movie I can get behind (well, "WTWTA" was good, but not in a good way...read my review).
The whole crew here deserves a pat on the pack for creating this masterwork of a film. Overall, "Adaptation" is a work of art.
