Review of Adaptation. (2002) by Vik S — 17 Apr 2011
Contemptuously funny, fearlessly honest, Charlie Kaufman's second offering makes the entire process of creation, a dazzling creation in it's own right. Spike Jonze's deceptively clear, even direction is the perfect foil to Kaufman's kaleidoscopic, fractal-like screenplay.
Nicolas Cage literally takes your breath away in his slouching, balding double act. Chris Cooper's character is so outstandingly oddball and he is so adept at playing it that he had us rubbing our eyes in disbelief.
And Meryl Streep, I now know why she is the goddess people swear that she is. Add to that delightful cameos by John Cusack, Catherine Keener, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Tilda Swinton and a howler by Brian Cox.
I felt the ending was kind of inconsistent with the rest of the movie, but then with this kind of a gleefully eclectic ride, it was probably meant to be that way.
