Review of Ad Astra (2019) by Cassio13 — 04 Oct 2019
Ad Astra is the rare sci-fi that doesn't feel like another mindless blockbuster, it's a very special film and you must be patient with the movie, because it is definitely worth the wait.
The acting is really solid, Brad Pitt delivers a performance so nuanced and remarkable, carrying the emotional weight some scenes deserve, giving one of the best in his acting career, a great year for Pitt. Tommy Lee Jones, Ruth Negga and Donald Sutherland are all good in their roles, in their journey of humanity with our main character.
The visuals and cinematography in this movie are terrific, fantastic and it has a distinct palette, from the black and white of the Moon to the red of Mars, it's just perfect, it has the best visuals I have seen in the year so far. The sound editing and score are also very balanced, not as grandiose as in Interstellar, but really on point.
Overall, it was an excellent movie, well-crafted by the director James Gray, with rich themes, perfect visuals and a Oscar nomination worthy performance from Brad Pitt.
