Review of A Very Long Engagement (2004) by Stefan P — 16 Mar 2009
The visuals in "A very long engagement" has been described as "jaw-droppingly beautiful". I think that's an understatement, because there is beautiful movies and there is movies from Jean-Pierre Jeunet.
The visuals is simply on a whole new level, with amazing photography, colours and camerawork. The feeling for details, both in the environments and in the characters lives, is truly fascinating. Needless to say, the acting is top notch with the beautiful and skilled Audrey Tautou in the leading role.
The story is intriguing, the music is wonderful, and the sound effects feels astoningly real. The war scenes is portraid in a very realistic way and the ending is great. Despite all the praise it has gotten this movie will probably be one of the most underrated ones, in the shadow of Amelie from Montmartre (which is a perfect movie as well).
