Review of A Very Long Engagement (2004) by Michael M — 08 Nov 2012
"A very long, yet very engaging movie!".
(I've seen this film a few months back but was too busy with more important stuff to post a review.).
I had decided to let this one pass me by as I thought this was another one of those artsy-fartsy French films with subtitles that tend to make you dizzy than help you understand the story.
But I just couldn't resist an invitation (a free one at that) from a friend to watch this movie, and so I got to see "A Very Long Engagement".
It turned out to be one of the best foreign language films I've ever seen. Lots of really intriguing plot points and twists and turns to keep your butt glued to your seat and your eyes glued to the screen.
Audrey Tautou was really a sight to see playing Mathilde--a young soldier's fiancee who had to go through a hell of an ordeal just to find out if her lover, Manech, survived the battlefields or not (a plot point that I won't spoil for those who haven't seen the film).
The cinematography was awesome and the script was pretty tight. There's also a surprise cameo by Jodie Foster (well it was a surprise for me, at least--I didn't know she was in the film) who has a very pivotal role. This movie's got a lot going on for film buffs of every type. And the subtitles didn't get in the way either.
Jean-Pierre Jeunet's masterpiece is definitely right up there with the likes of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", "Lagaan", and "Hero"-outstanding foreign language films!
