Review of A Very Long Engagement (2004) by Damjan R — 27 Sep 2012
Sometimes, a film can get most things right, but not the tone, and that is the case here. A Very Long Engagement is actually a very long story of a persistent young girl determined to find here lost fiance who went of to war (WW1).
In its heart this is a kind of detective love story, but truth be told it's a jumbled mess. The actors are good but a touch on the peculiar side, and everything is sprinkled with a very odd sense of humor, that I found myself wondering what I was watching.
The cinematography on the other hand is marvelous, and the film really is a looker. It's just too bad that the film never settled on one style, and instead did everyone, and failed in everyone equally.
