Review of A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) by Aparna P — 07 Dec 2008
Geez, the early fifties were full of bleak films. This one is interesting. It's all advertised around Brando, yet it's Vivian Leigh whom the story is really about. However, I've seen Leigh twice, once here and the other in Gone With The Wind. Both times I found her acting way too over the top, but it was more suited here, as her character has quite an obvious mental illness. In the days before Prozac, she gradually slips further into her illness.
Brando is awesome, but lost to Bogart for best actor. Brando was good, but I still think Bogie earned his Oscar.
Great movie, but certainly not a fun movie to watch.
