Review of A Short Film About Love (1988) by Eeva N — 02 Oct 2007
I'm sorry, I can't help it. I just love Kieslowski, so there's no way I can write an objective review of anything that he's touched. To me, everything he's done is perfect. Or maybe it isn't just me, maybe that's just how it is: everything he's done IS perfect? His approach to examining love is fresh and unusual.
Love takes many forms, and in this case it's love that's developed in a young man's mind, though a telescope towards a woman at least 15 years his senior who lives in the block of flats opposite his place.
So far it's been very one-sided but pure nevertheless, he's even stopped wanking whilst peeping at her. Here, love takes unexpected turns. It is playful, swaps roles, is cruel and painful, never straightforward, never predictable.
A Short film about love is simply work of a genius from the beginning to the end.
