Review of A Place in the Sun (1951) by Elizabeth W — 18 Jun 2008
What a tragic movie. A love triangle that was doomed from the start, but it was just so hard to watch it all fall apart. Great performances by the three main leads. Elizabeth Taylor was simply dazzling and could have made any man fall for her and her classic line, "Are they watching us?!", just fills my head when I think of this movie.
Shelley Winters also performed well, certainly strong-willed and created a presence that her character needed. Monty Clift really stole the second half of the film, he really grabbed your emotions and made you worry and feel as much guilt as someone in his situation would face.
Franz Waxman's score for the film is masterful, and gives the film an amaizing foundation. Really a tragic story, but it certainly had its soft moments, and I think that's just perfect, although it's such a shame that such a romance had to die.
