Not as good in some ways as Lean's earlier epics such as Bridge on the River Kwai, Dr. Zhivago, and Lawrence of Arabia but it stands on its own with a good cast that gives great insight into the racial tensions and misunderstandings in the last decades of the British Raj in India.
