Review of A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014) by Jamie L — 10 May 2015
This is a wonderful film. Sheila Vand and Arash Marandi seem like real folks facing difficult choices. The lingering shots (the cinematography is stunning) give you time to see what they see and to think what they might be thinking.
Even the supporting characters are engaging and have realistic reactions to what they see but perhaps don't fully understand. The boy and the cat are luminous.I swore I'd never watch another vampire flick because most fail to deliver their potential.
However "A Girl ..." promised a rich texture and did not disappoint. It's not just a vampire film, It's an understated film about drugs, wealth, poverty, crime and love -- that just happens to have a vampire in the mix.
Horror, yes, but also pathos, irony, humor.
