Review of A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014) by Sanity Assassin ! — 29 Dec 2016
Quite awaited film for me. Knowing it was something different and it has good reviews everywhere too. With "The first Iranian Vampire Western" as tagline, you know you are up for something special.
And you sure are. The girl - a hijab wearing nightwalker is wandering around and does normal vampire stuff. If she don't feast of them, she get involved with the people we meet here one way or another. Bad fellas seem to die, she is some sort of an clearer of bad people. She is mysterious indeed and even of we get to know her pretty well we don't know anything about her. A cat, vinyl, cars, earrings, heroin. There are several repeated materials here but everything is a bit vague. Never finished, always open.
Great music, lovely shot and a different original approach. A bit artsy, but not my favorite kind. Stretched and noir-ish, with a plot that never entertain. I'm left with mixed feelings here as it got a great vibe that I normally dig. The solid beginning colapses a bit, even if great moments like the skateboard scene and some drug abuse scenes are sweet. I never catch that lovestory either, I never feel it.
Maybe I picked the wrong day, but somehow this film was kind of a let down for me, even with many great ingredients. Less substance than style, I guess.
5.5 out of 10 oil pump jacks.
