Review of A Ghost Story (2017) by Jesus C — 26 Jul 2017
A Ghost Story is a masterpiece of a tale of time and death, and so far the best 2017 film and A24 film I've seen. Since I was the only person in my theater (no joke. I was alone for the entire showtime), the atmosphere and tone were really strong and disturbing.
The majority of the film has no dialogue and is focused on the surreal environment and the stunning majestic cinematography. It's hard to believe that the budget of this film is only $100,000! The whole film feels like a magical home movie because of its limited aspect ratio.
There were a couple scenes that dragged on, but they had a purpose and were worth the wait. Even though Casey Affleck is covered by a white sheet for the majority of the film, you can feel his emotions and expressions.
I felt like I was on the edge of breaking into tears during the film. The film is an example of how David Lowery is such an amazing underrated director and writer, and I cannot wait for his next project.
Because of its ambiguous ending, I will think about A Ghost Story for days and I hope my ghost will come back to this moment.
