Review of A Better Life (2011) by Rob P — 18 Feb 2012
You'll never see it in the cineplex, but this one was good enough to earn a Best Actor nomination for Demian Birchir (there he is, right beside Pitt and Clooney!). Chris Weitz (About A Boy) directs a gripping docudrama about an undocumented man's fight to make it in the US, and to remain relevant to his teenage son.
Birchir delivers a performance that gradually burrows its way into your heart until you wind up loving the guy. Most of us are immigrants here in the US of A-- my Jewish grandparents were the Hispanic immigration "problem" of the 1920s-- and one watches the credits roll asking oneself how to create change.
A highly recommended movie, but not for a night when you need to tune out with a romcom.
