Review of A Better Life (2011) by Julie S — 22 Jan 2013
It's clear that Chris Weitz hasn't lived in this world enough to develop a personal vision about the subject matter, but even if the movie's not much more than a retread of BICYCLE THIEVES with illegal immigrants as the protagonists, that's not the worst plot to steal.
The son lacks much range (and his subplots about flirting with a criminal lifestyle are superficial), but Damian Bechir as the father fully embodies his unstable, hand to mouth existence and gives the movie its emotional power.
