It tis either a brave or foolhardy man who dares follow an established sci fi classic with a sequel but director Peter Hyams has pulled it off, altho lacking the sheer scope and mysticism of the original 2001: A Space Odyssey, he has fashioned his own mood and feel and in doing so created a suitable companion piece to Kubrick's original.
