Review of L'Avventura (1960) by Matthew L — 01 Oct 2007
When a group of wealthy Italians go on a boat cruise to a remote island and one of their group goes missing, her fiance and best friend set out to find her, only to fall in love with each other in the process.
We never do find out what happened to the woman, but that becomes beside the point in this dark and compelling relationship study. Antonioni creates a sense of existential dread and loneliness better than anyone else, and this masterful drama showcases his skill as a master craftsman.
A stunner.
