Review of Chronicle of a Summer (1961) by Kevin N — 19 Oct 2009
One of the most important documentaries in the history of the cinema, and a pleasure to watch even now. Rouch is striving for a purely objective film experience here, and though his interviewees all seem remarkably capitalist the selection still feels diverse.
What's extraordinary is how unfamiliar Rouch is in his own country after becoming so comfortable making films in foreign lands. The people in this film behave kindly, cruelly, naively and confidently, but never look staged or showy.
A great experiment by a great experimentor.
