Woody Allen is often recognized as one of the best writers in film but he's overlooked as a director. Annie Hall might be the case for it. He uses every technique under the sun(narration, subtitles, animation, flashbacks, split screen, characters talking directly to the camera, etc) all while throwing one liner after one liner at you and never once does it feel over directed.
Much like Pulp Fiction the only flaw is people saw a blueprint to create a successful movie and have been ripping it off ever since.
