Review of Mothlight (1963) by Garry J — 06 Jun 2007
This 4 minute film was made without a camera. Brakhage literally pasted twigs, leaves and the wings of dead moths onto the film and printed it. With his fingernails, he scratched his name onto a few feet of film, resulting in his signatured, literally scratched into the film.
What I liked about it is how creative and unique his approach was. I don't think he's the only one to make a short film without a camera but still, what a way to experiment. The end result is a barrage of sometimes barely decipherable messes of foliage and insect wings.
Very interesting and experimental.
