Review of Avalon (2001) by Garry J — 14 Sep 2007
Tedious! Sometimes when you watch a film you keep looking at your watch hoping it'll end soon and this is one of those films. The theme is that whole alternate reality, virtual world thing, already explored in The Matrix, eXistenZe and Tarkovsky's Stalker.
The story plods along like a dying man crawling up an especially steep hill. The cinematography is far too conscious of itself in trying to evoke a moodof claustrophobia and nihilism. There are far too many things wrong with the film and the message underneath it is nothing especially poignant.
Besides, after all the substandard special effects, bad acting and painfully slow story progression, any underlying message would have been forgotten.
