Review of Blood Into Wine (2010) by Joe C — 14 Apr 2011
Really interesting, somewhat odd documentary about Tool/A Perfect Circle/Puscifer frontman Maynard James Keenan's decision to start up a vineyard in rural Arizona and make wine. As Keenan explains it, wine making is not just a passion of his, but when Milla Jovovich asks him at one point what he sees himself doing in the future he tells her that he will mainly be a wine maker, with music as something which is more of a pastime. And you believe him.
This doc is great not only because it tells Keenan's story, but also because it goes through step by step and pretty thoroughly, the process of how a grape eventually becomes a wine. There's also some funny skits and silly interviews that are scattered throughout.
All in all this made me not only want to drink wine while I was watching it, but certainly track down a bottle of the stuff Keenan is making.
This is an entertaining and informative film from beginning to end.
