Review of Zulu (1964) by Vincent O — 30 Jun 2010
Brilliant old fashioned epic with a modern uncertainty of the actual value of war. A well organized Zulu army (of around 4,000) attacks a stubborn British outpost in 1879 (Rorke's Drift) and a record 11 Victoria Cross medals were awarded (for courage and valour beyond the call of duty).
Stanley Baker acted and produced, with an unknown actor called Michael Caine as support. The battles scenes are not quite as tight as they would be by today's standards but the scenery, cinematography, opening narration by Richard Burton and last but not least, the rebel rousing score by John Barry are all first rate.
