Review of Zorba the Greek (1964) by Ruth L — 30 Mar 2008
A solid classic; Anthony Quinn's career-defining role. Although at first it appears to be about the Englishman, Quinn steals every scene he's in as Zorba. It's wholly entertaining from start to finish.
That said, aside from Zorba the Greeks in this film are despicable. At two different points the local Greek characters show a complete lack of decency or compassion-it's frustating and a little disturbing. I won't get into it; I simply find it strange the only two respectable Greeks portrayed in the film are the village lunatic and Zorba. And Anthony Quinn isn't even Greek, he's Irish-Mexican.
But still, the film sports some great cinematography, the music is lively, and Zorba is fascinating to watch. Really quite an overlooked film, I think.
