Review of Zardoz (1974) by Chris V — 25 Sep 2008
Lolz. Ignore that rating. It means nothing. It's only there because this thing won't let me rate movies 1 star AND 5 stars simultaneously. It's preposterous dreck, but it's such phenomenally entertaining (and stupefying) dreck that it's nearly impossible not to love it.
Just in the first few minutes you get an unintentionally hilarious monologue from a disembodied head, a giant floating stone face saying, "The penis is evil!" and spitting guns, and Sean Connery in a loincloth with a ponytail.
And these are some of the more "normal" elements of a film that really does take itself quite seriously (which, in a way, makes it all the more amusing). It's certainly a sight to behold, and truly one of the most bizarre films I've ever seen.
Also: I don't think it could've worked with anyone OTHER than Connery. It just ... I don't know. In the face of being so goddamn ridiculous it's funny (and consistently so), it really does work brilliantly.
You've gotta see it.
