Review of Z (1969) by Bach P — 11 Mar 2009
Director Costa Gavras "Z" is one of the best political thrillers in the history of film. Based on a series of true events, "Z" follows the chaotic frenzy of an assassination of a political activist.
The film perfectly captures the paranoia and distress in a time of heavy political turmoil worldwide. The details in "Z" are vague at times; we don't necessarily know where and who the activist is fighting for.
Oddly enough, this is where the film shines among audiences worldwide. Even now, forty years after it's release, the political motivations in "Z" are still an issue for many who see the film.
This was not just a film for local audiences at the time, it was a film made to open the world's eyes on what was going on in the streets of politically unstable nations. Politics aside, this is a stunning film to watch on screen.
It's as fast as any thriller today; quick cuts, a hard-hitting script, and a fierce soundtrack makes the film feel as fresh now as it was the day it came out.
