Great stuff here, but weighted down by pretentious and pointless dialogue. Caine is terrific but vanishes for long stretches of the movie. Comparisons could be made between this and Fellini or Wes Anderson but this film does not have the charm or whimsical humor of either.
It tries too hard to be a "serious" film when it should be trying to be an entertaining one. There is beautiful cinematography and some delightful music, but the heightened sense of reality only works when the film is trying to be humorous or weird.
When it is trying to be deeply emotional or serious it fails completely except for the brilliant scenes with Michael Caine and Rachel Weisz.
