Review of Youth (2015) by Ian G — 29 Aug 2016
An oppulant and pretentious film that has gathered some pretty heavy hitters from the acting world in Harvey Keitel, Michael Caine, Paul Dano, Rachel Weiz and Jane Fonda to tell the story of two elderly artist buddies, one a director and the other a composer, who may or may not be tapped out and are seemingly just lapping up in the life of luxury just outside of Italy in a luxurious almost retirement home like hotel.
Not a lot happens outside of Caine being recruited or attempted to be by a representative of the Queen to perform his most noted work, and the boys oggling at or chuckling at the younger generation and comparing the states of aging, while Fonda and Weiz seem to bring the most life to the proceedings acting as the put upon women in their lives as ones ingeinue for his films and the others daughter.
All in all, despite the women's presence and the gorgeous scenery which is beautifully shot, the film simply comes across as rich white men's problems that are not really connection worthy. Indifferent.
