Review of You're Next (2013) by Matt P — 16 Jun 2014
Ahhh... a truly fresh horror flick! Over the last few years there has been a rash of "new" horror flicks that turn the genre on its head, but this one is perhaps the most grounded in reality.
The basic premise is that the victim fights back against the typical home-invasion murderers, and she does so in awesome (and sometime hilarious) ways. I also liked the fact that the reason for the home-invasion is explained during the film, which I don't think I've ever seen in a typical slasher film.
But these new and fresh elements take their toll on the movie... it just isn't very scary. There are a few creepy moments (mostly due to the huge creep factor of the masks the murderers wear), but overall, there wasn't very much tension present throughout the film, which is key to making a horror movie scary.
I think I only jumped once. But this movie absolutely knows what it is and doesn't try to be anything else. It's got a clever story, a healthy dose of both gore and humor, and the ending is fantastic.
But mostly, it's just fun to watch the token hot chick fight back for a change.
