Review of Your Sister's Sister (2011) by John M — 06 Jul 2012
Lynn Shelton's latest (the director of "Humpday") has a new film out that runs on the mumblecore style using dialogue and complex human emotions as the story. In this one, it's really interesting to see the characters play out.
While it's very minimalist and not a lot happens in terms of plot, after a while, we get used to these characters and develop an understanding and history of who they are, and Shelton does a great job of making us feel that.
I think it lacks the real darker and more realistic sides of characters these mumblecore films usually have. Speaking of Mark Duplass in this, his film "The Puffy Chair" is an example of a real dark and emotional Indie film, while also being cute and funny.
Shelton seems to have somewhat of a filter on here, catering to a certain "chick flick" going crowd that prevents it from being superior to most of its genre and style, but is still a warm, emotional and interesting film to watch.
