Review of Your Sister's Sister (2011) by Paul D — 07 Sep 2012
It's probably from a play because it has only 3 players essentially and doesn't rely on location or movement or activity. Anyhoo, Tom's been dead for a year and his friends are having a memorial. His brother, Jack (Mark Duplass), gets up for a speech and makes a hash of it...a bad hash...Tom's ex-g/f, Iris (Emily Blunt) tells Jack to take some time off to himself at her father's cabin on a lake somewhere near Seattle. He gets there, and unable to find the key, realises the cabin is occupied - by Hannah (Rosemarie Dewitt), Iris's lesbian half-sister, who's gone there to escape the breakup of a 7-year relationship.
Just when you're saying "well, this is awkward!!" for the first of about 103 times, Hannah turns up, and you get to say it for 102 more times.
I really enjoyed it. Rosemarie Dewitt, who played Rachel in the Anne Hathaway squirm-fest, Rachel's Getting Married, is almost as luminescent a character as Emily Blunt. I could sit for two hours watching EB spread Vegemite, she has such a screen presence. Don't know Mark Duplass but he was excellent too. And when I say squirm-fest, it was fine but AH's activities kept you saying "well, this is awkward".
It does make you somewhat envious of some of those lakeside cabins in the States. Idyllic! Until your peace is destroyed by some redneck blasting seven shades of shit out of the local fauna.
