Review of Young Adult (2011) by Doctor S — 15 Apr 2014
Calling this a "dark comedy" is as big a misnomer as I've heard for awhile. Why would I want to subject myself to the displeasure of watching this long as a seriously psychotic and alcoholic young woman goes on a twisted pursuit of her high school flame that's sure to mess up his life with a good wife and infant? I know such people probably exist, but I don't understand why this is supposed to be fascinating.
I gave it maybe 30 minutes or so, largely on the strength of Charlize Theron's portrayal, but really it would be a form of sadomasochism to stay with it longer than that. Screw the critics who praised this, another example of just how indulgent and wrong-headed many critics are when they're paid to sit through atrocious crap much of the time.
This isn't atrocious, it's just unworthy of our attention.
