Review of Young Adult (2011) by Chris S — 26 Nov 2013
I liked this movie. Others criticized it for lack of a character arc, meaning the main character didn't learn something new and change as a result. This movie was about broken people, literally and figuratively.
Charlize Theron plays Mavis Gary, a writer of fiction that is but all account a terrible person and the story being told is why she got that way. Along for the ride is Patton Oswald's character, Matt an old high school acquaintance that was victim of a brutal hate crime.
Matt plays a Jiminy Cricket that is caught up in Mavis's weird return to her hometown in order to steal back her one-time boyfriend. What follows is a series of bad behavior that's not as funny as it is psychotic and uncomfortable.
The story arc will have to suffice as oppose to an character arc, as the audience learns more about the characters then the characters learn about themselves.
