Review of You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger (2010) by Sv G — 07 Mar 2011
This is Allen's fourth film made in England. The characters are all very real and interesting but the story itself seemed unfinished. It's light and amusing but the weakest of the 4 made in the UK films.
Anthony Hopkins however?...WONderful performance as an aging man longing for his youth and fearing the later years of his life who leaves his wife for a younger woman (much to his own dismay). Josh Brolin on the other hand, NOT his best performance (and very likely his weakest) as a frustrated writer in his own troubled marriage who has an affair and robs a best friend of his book after he hears of his passing.
Interesting role but he plays it as a wooden paunchy cut-out of a man and I found him boring. Antonio Bandaras in a smaller role as the boss of Brolin's unhappy wife is delishiously devilish and cunning and brings to a small role what others could not have.
Over-all a fair film, and if a Woody Allen fan as I am - then naturally a must see.
