Review of You Were Never Really Here (2017) by Adriane B — 12 Oct 2018
Wow! I have to say I really liked this production. Some have called it the "modern day" Taxi Driver, however if this is the case, I found this film superior. Joaquin Phoenix once again has delivered another unique performance, especially with his bulked up body.
When we see the star shirtless, it looks like he took a page from Tom Hardy's playbook on training and "swelling up" for a respective role. Joaquin's physical transformation is very impressive.
The movie, and Phoenix's character are extremely brutal in their tactics for getting the job done so-to-speak. Coupled with an intense soundtrack, the picture never dulls and keeps you on the edge for the entire production.
The casting for each of the respective parts was also credible, especially the innocence of Ekaterina Samsonov, who played very well opposite Joaquin's character. Then there are the very disturbing parts regarding the abducted girls and the absolute sickness of the Pedophiles.
The scene with the wooden doll house backed with Angel Baby I found most unsettling. Overall, I believe this film will garner a lot of attention come award season, and would not be surprised if Joaquin Phoenix comes away with an Academy Award, he was that good.
