Review of You Were Never Really Here (2017) by Simon T — 16 Apr 2018
A slow dream-like revenge mystery with echoes of Taxi Driver, Point Blank and the hypnotic work of David Lynch. A barrel-chested and bearded Joaquin Phoenix lives with his demented mother and exorcises the demons of his past by hunting down paedophiles.
Onto this slim plotline Lynne Ramsay threads a beautifully photographed and superlative scored (Jonny Greenwood) dark examination of one man's soul. Phoenix is the perfect actor.
