Review of You Only Live Twice (2007) by Miroslav G — 25 May 2014
It seems as if these Bond films are confused on what they want to be really. Sometimes they want to be realistic, gritty, and straightforward espionage thrillers and at other times they want to be goofy, over the top, and campy adventure films.
And well, You Only Live Twice is a perfect example of those other times. You Only Live Twice was definitely the most ridiculous Bond film at its time (even more ridiculous than Goldfinger) with a plot that's so implausible and over the top that it seems like its a self-parody.
On top of that, Connery finally seems to show that he's growing a bit tired of the character and subsequently, is less enthusiastic than ever when it comes to his performance. Despite this, the film manages to just barely overcome these (and many other) shortcomings by being quite a bit entertaining with its action sequences, which were easily the best of their time.
So while You Only Live Twice boasts some truly thrilling action, it constantly gets weighed down by its ridiculousness. And while for some that might not matter, it's too ridiculous for my taste.
