Review of Alien: Covenant (2017) by Miroslav G — 20 Jul 2017
It's not quite the incoherent mess that preceded it, but Covenant lacks any originality; retreading the same tired genre tropes (characters looking in things that they clearly shouldn't, wandering off alone) defined by the franchise's first entry 36 years ago.
There are some intriguing ideas, unfortunately handled with the finesse of a Syfy channel original movie, and some lovely design work, but the film just doesn't know how to pace itself, torn between being the answer to Prometheus' nonsense while dispensing with anything raised in that story and attempting to connect into Alien simultaneously, not allowing itself any room to be its own animal.
The one good thing from this misstep is that it turns out Danny McBride can actually play it straight effectively.
