Review of Yi Yi (2000) by Kia B — 13 Apr 2008
Yi yi is about how we complicate life and how life complicates us. it evolves around a typical middle class Taiwanese family.
Edward yang made very good use of range and enviroment ( windows and reflections on glass). yang shot many scenes of the film from a long distance. he wanted us viewers to be an observer in these scenes rather than be immersed in the characters. I suggest that yang wants us to feel the characters confined by life by shooting scenes from outside a building and seeing the characters through windows. yang used up close shots to express when the characters were being honest and free from the shackles of life. the most obvious times of this was when the family members talked to their unconscious grandma individually.
Overall, I think yi yi is a good, realistic film.
