Review of Yi Yi (2000) by James M — 24 May 2007
A one and a two. Yang has created a beautiful portrait of a questioning family in Taiwan. Questions arise from all members of the Jian family when their beloved grandmother slips into a coma. NJ, the father, must confront his past and a former lover, Mim-Min, his wife, must come to terms with the fact that her mother may die, their daughter, Ting-Ting, searches for love in all the wrong places, and the youngest son, Yang Yang, seeks the answers to truth and the meaning of life itself.
Yi Yi features some magnificent reflective scenes using mirrors constantly and using wide shots with characters either in the background or not on screen at all. In this simplistic, beautiful film Yang has crafted one of the best stories about a family and fortunately one of the most redemptive.
Sometimes, as Yang Yang learns, their aren't always answers to everything and sometimes, we must wait.
