Review of Y Tu Mamá También (2001) by Johnnylee T — 11 Feb 2016
Road movie that is compelling because it of its unusual setting (Mexico) and cast (two adolescents/youths and an older married woman). Also, the telling is unique in its use of voice-over narration which relates what has happened and what will happen, often about events unrelated to the present, and unconnected to the main characters. Also, the camerawork is very daring - panning to another part of the scene. There is one difficult continuous five-minute take that required all three actors to perform rapid-fire right on cue (the drinking/dancing sequence at Chuy's during their last night together).
Every aspect of the film is done magnificently. I guess I found the two "boys" just irritating at times, but they were no doubt realistic depictions of careless youth. The adult voice-over provided the maturity that was lacking on-screen. (I thought it may have belonged to one of the boys looking back on the escapade from his middle years, but it wasn't).
I wished the ending were different but then it would have been a different movie!
