Review of Y Tu Mamá También (2001) by Matthew F. J — 27 Jan 2015
This film is probably one of my all time favorite because when I fist saw it as a teenager, it slapped me in the face like a storm. First the story is told in a great way with a very interesting voice that seem to be at first random but slowly gives a greater dimension to the film.
The three main actors are equally fantastic in their own parts and their alchemy on screen is working wonderfully. Cuaron has found a way to portray a difficult life transition from teenage-hood to man-hood with a simplicity and an easiness that I can't quite pinpoint.
Many might be disturbed by the story line but I found it amazingly refreshing, light and un-dramatic in a certain way although the film is filled with dramatic scenes, tension and passion. Maybe that's the key of the film, mixing all these feeling as the two male characters transit from their strong childhood friendship to their inevitable adult rivalry for the convoyed prize: the female.
It's the theater of life unfolding before and the oldest story of the world, jealousy, treason, betrayal, lies and test of friendship. Every time I watch this film, I see something new in it, a new layer of emotion, a new depth of understanding because as i'm getting older I understand some of the feelings better or should I say in a different way because like the characters, we grow older and life never really seem the same over the years.
We mature, we grow, we learn and thus our relationship with that type of film will evolve and mature as well. I highly recommend it to anyone willing to watch something good, fresh and intense. This is definitely a solid film.
