Review of X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) by Mike D — 19 Oct 2016
X-Men Apocalypse! it really is the biggest film of all the X-Men's in terms of how many mutants it tries to juggle and Apocalypse himself being the biggest baddie in the X-Men Universe, however with a movie that's so jam packed it's tough to make things run smoothly, and there's a few hiccups along the way, BUT that doesn't Stop this film from being a blast.
Overall I gotta be honest............ I fucking LOVED this movie! They did an excellent job with the casting, specially for Cyclops, Jean and Nightcrawler, who shined more than anyone. Storm and Psyloche were pretty OK. Oscar Isaac as Apocalypse was really solid! I know most people were split on him, I thought he played a good Apocalypse, nothing Great or special but never BAD.
As for the returning X-Men they were Awesome as before! Magneto and Professor X definitely are the heart and soul of these new films and since First Class you can tell that they are the base of these movies! Without them they would fall apart, that being said it really feels like they are paving the way for the younger X-Men! SO in the future films the new X-Men take on baddies while Mystique leads them, and Professor X takes a back seat.
Now the plot is pretty simple-ish Apocalypse is the 1st mutant EVER to exist, he can and does eventually transfer himself to another younger body and he plans to destroy everything because he can! He also has 4 sidekicks, known as the 4 horsemen, and he recruits Storm, Psyloche, Angel and Magneto. He also has the ability to make them like 10x stronger! And now the X-Men have to stop Apocalypse! That's the plot in a nutshell with a few subplots and stuff.
Here's were things get messy when they bring in extra side characters and stories, etc. If we've learned anything from Spider-man 3 and X3 is that too many characters and plots can ruin a movie! And although Apocalypses was never ruined, (not to me at least) it did feel slow and bloated at times. For Example Moira from First Class is brought back.......... WHY!?!?!? They do have a semi-legit reason I suppose but she could have easily been cut from the movie and they could have switched things around for the plot to make sense. William Striker is back! WHY?!?!?!.......OHH I KNOW because his presence leads into a Wolverine Cameo, pretty sure this is the only reason!!!
Quicksilver is back! and yes. HE STEALS THE DAMN SHOW! He alone is worth the price of admission. I want to see more movies simply because of him! That's when you know you have a great character on your hands, lets just all pray that he never gets killed off!
Mystique, she's back of course and she takes on more of a Leadership Role in this film and her character development within this new trilogy is pretty interesting. In First Class she's Charles's friend and right hand woman, with Magneto and Professor X as the leaders, she's like the 2nd in command! In DOFP she plays the wildcard who's important to the plot because she's the reason Sentinels get stronger, etc, etc. and lastly in Apocalypse she's the one who leads the younger X-Men group, because everyone looks up to her after what she did in DC. One complaint I've heard from many is that they are force feeding us JLAW and that her being the face of the X-Men is just LAME, and one thing I do agree with was that for 85% of this movie she's in her normal looking stage and that bugged me! It honestly felt like "hey lets have her looking like Jennifer Lawrence because that's what her fans want". Just bugged me a lot to be honest.
This movie was also surprisingly funny at times! Nightcrawler and Quicksilver were the comedy relief. I liked the chemistry between Jean and Cyclops, the emotional moments Charles and Eric had were great! This movie was a roller coaster of emotions, and I loved the Easter eggs too.
I'm giving X-Men Apocalypse an 8.5/10!!! It's definitely worth watching you guys that 48% on RT is just BULL FUCKING SHIT! This movie is miles better than that! Stop being sheep and go see the damn movie and make up your own opinion!!! OHH and those new costumes at the end of the movie were PERFECT!!!
