Review of X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) by Nathonas — 11 Jun 2016
The movie has a lot of problems, but they all boil down to bad writing.
The only good parts of the film are the Quicksilver scenes and the final fight sequence.
The dialogue is weak and oftentimes spells out obvious things for no reason. There are too many characters and their development is rushed and doesn’t have much impact - even previously interesting and complex characters like Magneto are given cliched, hamfisted storylines.
The new younger characters feel particularly out of place, like they belong in a teenage TV drama.
The pacing is bad and even simple things like using the appropriate music for a scene are somehow botched - the Apocalypse/Angel scene being a prime example.
Meanwhile, the mutants recruited by Apocalypse are terrible choices. One of the most powerful mutants ever recruits a random Egyptian girl that steals money, a chick in spandex, and some teenage rebel with wings. If he’s so intelligent, couldn't he spend some time choosing actually loyal followers with more useful powers?
This film is a disappointment compared to X-men first class and days of future past.
