Review of Written on the Wind (1956) by John A — 14 Aug 2010
As my husband said, it's rather like watching the pilot for "Dallas" -- and it might very well have been. The only thing more contrived and unbelievable than the plot is the ending, with bad girl Dorothy Malone suddenly reformed and taking Daddy's place at the head of the Hadley company.
It's worth watching just for the sheer fun of the absurdity and outrageous melodrama, but also for the use of color to establish atmosphere and symbolize character. Malone's clashing reds and oranges and fuschias, Bacall's quiet, subdued, calming blues and greens, the use of white and black -- it's all very deliberate and masterful.
