Review of Wristcutters: A Love Story (2007) by Jason W — 16 Aug 2010
Quirky, original, entertaining, and quite captivating. Some silly surrealism, but it stopped just short of being overdone so that it did not spoil the seriousness of many scenes. A skillful blend of strange and mundane, funny and grave, serious and light. In fact, the moral of the story is a very stern warning to not take life too seriously; appreciate life for what it is, but don't get attached to what you have.
Stand out performance by Shea Whgham as the Russian gypsy musician. Could not get over the similarities between Shannyn Sossamon and Robin Wright-Penn, as much for her performance in this film as her looks. Patrick Fugitdid a fine job deliberately underplaying his role as the apathetic Zia (at least I assume it was deliberate as it worked well and he showed just enough life force to believe he wanted something, even as allowed the slightest breeze to direct his course).
This is a film that will stick with you, and make you ponder things for a long time to come.
