Review of World's Greatest Dad (2009) by Matt C — 08 Mar 2014
This is a film with a good central concept, but the way that it executes it ranges from mediocre to gratingly terrible. The intended satire is neither sharp nor funny. In fact, it's so one-noted that it becomes very dull very quickly, and the "humor" is just "how daring and crude can we seem without adding any real substance to the film?" instead of being based off of wit or good ideas.
I wanted to murder the writer/director as I suffered through the first half of this movie because of how annoying and angering it was, and then I thought that some social commentary would come into place, but that commentary is so basic and shallow that it just further validates that this movie doesn't really need to exist at all.
The performances are good, but that's all I call consistent. I have no idea how this got such good reviews since it just fell on its face over and over. Even the parts that are supposed to be touching seem like they're just trying to redeem the film from its pitch black tone so it can satisfy a larger audience, and it doesn't help that there's no character to the film, and it feels like nothing happens at all.
3.7/10, really bad, two thumbs down, far below average, etc.
