Review of World's Greatest Dad (2009) by Allen L — 31 Aug 2014
I finally caught this last night on Netflix. Hoo boy. This is a hard movie to watch. First off, Bobcat Goldthwait's script and direction are stellar. Really. I was impressed. There was one segment that seemed like it was better on paper (the ghost kid scene) but, that was it.
The music choices were dynamite. The cast, especially Alexie Gilmore were all excellent. But, what can be said of Williams? This is another of his very restrained and tortured performances. Perhaps one of his best.
But, it's almost too hard to watch. (SPOILER) When he discovers his son, his reaction is so guttural and pained that it's hard not to imagine his own family reacting the same way when they discovered him.
That plus the anti-suicide monologue that his character delivers gave this film a weirdly and sadly meta quality.
