Review of Woman in the Dunes (1964) by Steve B — 19 Nov 2007
The elements erode all man-made creations, and the characters' sanity and certainties. The entomologist becomes the insect to be studied by an unblinking film. He realizes all his life, all his convictions, all his dreams and all he ever lived for was built on quicksand foundations.
A pulsating rhythm of savagery forms a tumultuous undercurrent for the entire film. Sands move in ghostly, mesmerizing, whispering rhythms, lulling and tormenting the eyes at the same time.
