Review of Woman in Gold (2015) by Pamela D — 04 Apr 2015
A week after wasting my time at a movie praised by the critics, 3 Hearts, I saw the critically panned Woman in Gold, which rated applause by the audience at its conclusion. I will agree that there is some clunky dialogue, especially some of the German lines which were seemingly read by British actors phonetically but the details of the story , though the ending is known, keep you watching and rooting for the mildly sarcastic Mirren and her wimpy lawyer.
Overall the cast was interesting and exceptional, lots of folks from your favorite PBS series and others I've never heard of but hope to see more of soon.
The Holocaust flashbacks were affecting without overwhelming the viewer or the story line into the present. More than the usual devastation and horror, they remind us of the reality of German/Austrian/Jewish culture and how truly integrated and important it was to German life prior to the Nazis.
This is one of those movies you should go see, leaving the critics to sit home chewing their fingernails watching dull but sensitive/meaningful movies that nobody believes.
